Our horses are not your typical equine therapy horses. They are not riding horses, and we do not let the community handle our horses. Our horses are specially trained to do a specific motion algorithm, for a specific length, time, duration, and varying speeds. Science-trained horses!
The Horses requires a high-quality protein diet to maintain their muscle, athleticism, and health. All of our horses are fed Purina Active Performance, Purina Active Senior, or Purina Growth. Our Horses are fed grain every morning by 9:00AM, always two hours before each session to give them time to eat and digest their food. Each horse has a specific diet according to their needs.
The horses requires a high-quality alfalfa mix hay, and we free feed our horses. This means that our horses can eat as much as they want/need, have full access to fresh water that is filled daily. We do not feed dusty or moldy hay (cattle hay) to our horses, this is to prevent heaves, and other respiratory issues in our herd.
In the Winter, our horses wear full winter blankets and hoods to protect them from the elements. We do not ride our horses in weather below 35 degrees. We use fleece warming blankets in between sessions to keep our horses body temperatures stable to prevent colic or other temperature induced issues. In the summer our horses wear fly masks, sheets, and leg boots to keep them sound, and they are sprayed three times a day with fly spray to keep them from any type of natural distress. In the winter, our horse pens are cleaned daily to ensure they are in clean areas and to prevent hoof bruising/stone bruising in their feet. We use sand to alter icy areas to prevent falls, and we layer hay in bedding areas to give our horses a place to lay down and sleep. We also watch the weather, in the event of a potential storm, we bring our horses into their indoor stalls to prevent injury to them. Each horse on the DTOM Ranch has their own box stall, or shelter that they can go into.
Our horses have their own personal farrier to maintain required balance and soundness and are seen every 4 weeks to keep their feet in prime condition. Our horses are vet-checked every six months to provide clean bills of health not only for insurance but to make sure they are sound and able to maintain their sessions. Our horses are rotated out of each session every other week to give them a break. We give them play time, exercise pens, and wintering pens to keep the mental health of our horses sound. They also have toys in their pen for stimulation and play.
Our horses are groomed before and after their sessions to ensure they are comfortable. In the summer when it is hot, our horses are sprayed down and kept in the indoor stalls to keep them cool and bug free. We also have an indoor misting system to keep our horses cool during their sessions.
Our horses are fitted for all of their equipment prior to each session. We do not use saddles, only a small rope halter, a one-foot lead, and blankets. We also have a required maximum weight limit for each rider and horse depending on their size and condition. This is for safety of the rider and health and safety of our horses. We take this seriously as safety is our number one priority. This weight limit is determined by our veterinarian during each health visit and check-up.
